There are many good residential treatment programs for addiction. They each require that individuals be sequestered (to varying degrees and for varying lengths of time) during treatment. In effect, these programs demand that individuals who are seeking to transform their lives must step "outside of the context of their lives" to bring about the changes they desire As a result, residential programs do not meet the treatment needs of each and every person.

Jackson-Murray's reputation is founded on its pioneering development of effective, intensive, non-residential addiction treatment programs such as The ELAN Experience.

Individuals undergoing nonresidential treatment are able to continue to live and work in their home communities supported by the care and encouragement of their families and friends during recovery. (In fact, Jackson-Murray encourages family members and partners to participate in the treatment process.) Recovering individuals are further able to apply and practice their newly acquired life skills immediately in daily living situations.

Jackson-Murray's nonresidential programs are also intensive, both in time and mode of delivery. For instance, the 51/2 week Core Program of The ELAN Experience features 13 hours a week of focused group interaction and personal counselling whose emphasis is on self-awareness, choice-making and the integration of positive changes within a process of self-discovery This intensive period may be followed by 26 weekly sessions (or more) of individual After Care counselling. The treatment approach is client-centred, with the counsellor acting as the catalyst to help individuals discover the motivation for change within themselves.

Nevertheless, nonresidential treatment is also not for everyone. Entrance criteria for admission to Jackson-Murray's programs is strict, and a detailed personal assessment is required to insure that nonresidential treatment is appropriate for each individual circumstance.

The ELAN Experience is British Columbia's premiere Intensive, Non-Residential Treatment Program for alcohol, drug and process dependencies. Pioneered by Jackson-Murray in 1987, this confidential program has proven itself to be effective for those truly ready and desirous to change their lives.

The distinguishing feature of The ELAN Experience is that individuals are able to continue to work while undertaking treatment, and are able to live at home where they can benefit from the support and encouragement of their family and friends.

In essence, The ELAN Experience is a quality of life enhancement program. Comprehensive, structured and highly motivational, the holistic program is customized to each person's individual needs. It dynamically combines both group and personal counselling with the goal of:

* Educating the individual about the addiction process, its psychology, its consequences and its effects;
* Enhancing the individual's awareness about their personal behavior patterns;
* Providing the tools for withdrawal and recovery, and for coping with ongoing addiction issues;
* Developing self-empowering skills to improve self-image; and
* Creating a life plan whose focus and practical applications are geared to personal growth.

The ELAN Experience is a totally confidential Fee For Service program.

INDIVIDUAL ASSESSMENT
All applicants for The ELAN Experience undergo a detailed assessment and evaluation process, in which personal and family history are reviewed, and issues are discussed to plan the goals for treatment success. Since not every individual is ready or suited for The ELAN Experience, Jackson-Murray is entirely responsible for its admission decisions.

72 HOUR CORE PROGRAM
Intensive group sessions are undertaken on an evening or evening/weekend basis for 5 1/2 weeks (Participation by partners or significant others is encouraged at no additional charge).

AFTER CARE COUNSELLING

As follow-up to the intensive Core Program, every individual may continue to participate in 26 weekly group or individual sessions, which may further continue up to 17 months, depending on assessed need.

Jackson-Murray offers a Free Confidential Consultation for The ELAN Experience at its offices in Surrey and Vancouver, by appointment.
